Background

Quintly (since acquired as Facelift Data Studio) is a startup based in Cologne, Germany that provides an advanced social media analytics platform. I joined as Art Director partnering primarily with the Growth team to spearhead marketing and communications, support product design, and eventually relaunch their website on Hubspot with a brand refresh.

I'll be honest, revisiting this project feels like a lifetime ago. While I was technically hired as their Art Director in 2016, I was young and new to the tech scene. Classic startup scenario of things moving very quickly and myself having to learn virtually everything even faster.

When our lead product designer suddenly left, I stepped in to support our developers in the midsts of an ambitious product redesign, a project I codenamed Project Malibu. From user onboarding to extensive research on search and discovery UX, learning about React libraries, design systems, you name it — this had a profound influence on my career since.

I re-focused my efforts towards Quintly's brand identity and aging website once I was able to hire a more senior product designer. Using a white-label template from the Hubspot marketplace, I rebuilt the entire site from the ground up, leading design, copywriting, UI/UX and even web development, getting hooked on the power of CSS classes and variables.

Needless to say, I leaned heavily into this teal color palette, almost certainly to a fault. This was early enough in my career that accessibility and contrast checks were clearly not as well-prioritized as they are today in my work, and the monotonous color usage is certainly something I would revisit today if I could. Oh, to be young again.

I was able to successfully pitch my vision to the founders for our new brand, not just with the website relaunch, but also a new logo that emphasized our data visualizations as part of our analytics platform, along with new brand guidelines, events booth designs, product illustrations and much more. Our new website had a 44% traffic increase in the first year!

As a bootstrapped startup, our product design used a fair bit from Google's Material Design standards, including iconography, which I used as a launching point for extending larger graphics or spot illustrations to be leveraged across product and marketing. Does it feel outdated now? Yes. Were we super happy with it at the time? Also yes.

True to my roots as an illustrator, I used Quintly's new blog that I built and relaunched in Hubspot as a channel to try new graphic styles for different editorial purposes, while still incorporating some of the extended pastel-like palette from our brand guidelines. This gave some better variety to our stories and to generate fresh interest when shared across social.
