Background
I joined Okta’s brand Studio team about a year after they acquired us at Auth0. This kicked off with an ambitious brand evolution and gave us just two months to launch the new identity online with Okta’s website. So began my journey leading art direction and driving a revamped design system called Oktave to scale for their entire digital ecosystem.

At the heart of my pitch for the Oktave design system, was really positioning our creative team as strategic and visionary partners in the future of Okta as a digital-first brand. It was also about highlighting that key partnership with our developers; empowering engineering teams to build better foundations and ultimately increase velocity for further innovation.

For a company of Okta’s size and scope, accelerating system maturity was key to ensure we were upholding an exceptional standard for design, development and user experience at every step in the journey. Audits, research, documentation, cross-functional enablement, strategic roadmaps and more were all part of my initiative to have it built it’s very best.

When we launched our first big delivery on the new platform using Oktave in record time, hundreds of localized product pages globally, me and my dev lead were invited to share our story at the Company All-Hands, introduced by CEO Todd McKinnon and to a virtual audience of thousands. We had some fun ‘product marketing’ our own design system!

Communication and relationship-building is truly a secret sauce. We weren’t just creating a system to delight and convert users online, it was also transforming how our teams worked internally, to get better work done faster and on-brand. Building awareness, measuring success, and sharing our wins all supported interest and investment in this critical initiative.

My team helped influence Okta’s brand evolution to balance its product-led technology, predominantly for IT and security teams, with a more human approach for brand awareness campaigns, making the concept of securing peoples’ digital identity more accessible to a wider market. Our clean, typographic brand was intended to inspire trust and maturity.

As the AI boom took over, Okta and Auth0 knew we would play a central role as one of the world’s leading identity providers to secure and protect against rogue agents or bot attacks. One of my last projects was helping with explorations and art direction for a homepage redesign in which I aimed to refine our brand and balance of AI, digital and human identity.

My time at Okta ran parallel to the company transforming its business with the acquisition of Auth0 and launching its brand evolution in a signal of increased investment for design as an industry differentiator. From its safe but stale history, we built a professional but personable enterprise brand, humble but holistic foundations, and next-generation system to scale.

I left at the end of July 2025 to take a break after years of driving these initiatives. I felt accomplished and grateful as the design system team was being formalized to begin the next phase of a web platform migration, further using Oktave as a foundation for its digital strategy, and my design team envisioning the next generation of the brand in the era of AI.
